WHY DO WE DO GROUPS?
On February 20th, we had our Winter Leader Training event that was an opportunity to connect with other leaders, learn about strategies upcoming in 2018 and most importantly refocus on the why. Here are some core thoughts and verses on the “why” behind Connect Groups at One Church.
Yes, whatever a person is like, I try to find common ground with him so he will let me tell him about Christ and let Christ save him.”
1 CORINTHIANS 9:22 TLB
“We know what real love is because Jesus gave up His life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters.”
1 JOHN 3:16 NLT
“Our relationship with each other is the criterion the world uses to judge whether our message is truthful - Christian community is the final apologetic.
”Francis Schaeffer’s: The Mark of the Christian
As we continue to grow and launch our first campus the necessity for groups is only increasing. At One Church we say “prayer and planning are soul mates.” Towards that end, here are some upcoming plans, dates and strategies to take note of for your group in 2018.
Most importantly to note is that the sessions are not meant to serve as an overly prescriptive path for your group. Instead, they are times of the year that we emphasize groups as a church to help people connect and refocus on groups and their importance. Winter Session: Feb 11 - April 1 | Summer Leader Training Event: May 5th | Summer Session: June 3 - July 29th | Fall Leader Training Event: August 11th | Fall Session: September 9th - November 4th
+ NEW LEADERS IN YOUR GROUP
The best place for us to raise up new leaders is from within groups. Always be on the lookout for the next leader with potential to lead a group, give them opportunities to learn and call the leader out of them. If you need help on the process - work with your coach!
One new opportunity for group leaders to promote your group is a selfie video introducing yourself and your group. Below is an example. Please send your videos to Anthony.email@example.com or upload to google drive at the link below. These will be posted via social media to connect people to groups.
+ GATHER & GROW
To help us as a church grow more groups, we will be testing a strategy called “Gather and Grow.” The core idea is that our very own One Church curriculum based on a previously conducted series called “Become,” will be available in the lobby for anyone to pickup to lead with a group of friends, family members, co-workers, neighbors, etc privately. All you have to do is have a desire to “HOST”
H: Have a Heart for People
O: Open Your Home
S: Serve Food
T: Turn on the Video
Then the guide walks you through a few questions for discussion.
+ WEDNESDAY NIGHT GROUPS
In the auditorium from 7p - 8:30p we will have an open group for anyone who has been unable to find another option. We will have worship, prayer time and a quick devotional thought with questions to guide discussion. Then everyone will separate into groups for a time of discussion.
+ PROVIDING CARE
As a group leader, you are the first line of defense when it comes to providing pastoral care for high and low moments in your group members’ lives. But, you cannot be expected to do everything. To start the care process always remember ESPN:
E: Encourage S: Share Scripture P: Pray N: Next Steps
If the issue after ESPN is not tenable, please connect with Brian Stone the leader of our Pastoral Care team at Brian.firstname.lastname@example.org
Group leaders should never be on an island. And should never feel like they are on an island. That is a recipe for disaster and burnout. To support group leaders, we will be providing coaches. Their goal and mission is simply to be a support to leaders, their development, their struggles and their triumphs. To sign up to be a group leader coach email Anthony at email@example.com
+ WORTHINGTON CAMPUS
As we launch our new campus in Worthington we will be looking for group leaders to go! Our goal would be to launch with 15-20 groups that belong to the Worthington Campus. This will help support the community at Worthington. We will be encouraging (but not mandating) that group members and leaders find a group that is associated with their campus. That said, to start we will be hosting Wednesday Night Groups at the Gahanna Campus and inviting members at both locations to participate.
